¡¾Uses¡¿ Industrial applications for benzyl alcohol include its use in ballpoint pen inks and as a solvent for the extractive distillation of m- and p-xylenes or m- and p-cresols. It also serves as a chain transfer agent for high-molecular-weight polymers, as a solvent for methyl methacrylates and epoxy resins, and in the manufacture of nylon cord and polyester film. Benzyl alcohol is used as a substitute ingredient in paint strippers, replacing methylene chloride.
The photographic industry consume the benzyl alcohol for the use in developing baths for color films and color tran***rencies, as a dispersing agent for silver halides in mixed packet emulsions and in stop baths for the production of lithographic plates.
The pharmaceutical industry uses benzyl alcohol for its local anesthetic, antiseptic and solvent properties. Small amounts of benzyl alcohol are also used in baby oils and suntan lotions. Perfumes, soaps and cosmetics also provide a market for benzyl alcohol.
Benzyl alcohol is used in the production of benzyl chloroformate, which in turn can be used in the manufacture of a***rtame, a high-intensity no caloric sweetener.
